Michael Hagan joined Canterbury in 1983 as a five eighth.

The brother of Bob Hagan, Michael started in third grade but by mid-season was a regular member of the reserve grade team. He received the opportunity in first grade against Penrith as a replacement.

In 1984, Michael was a regular member in the reserve grade team but in 1985 became a regular member of the first grade team as a five eighth while Terry Lamb spent time at lock.

Lamb was injured during the finals and Michael played in the Premiership winning team against St George as five eighth.

In 1986, Michael moved to the centres mid-season and played in the Grand Final against Parramatta.

In 1987, Michael started the season as a centre but finished the season at fullback when Mick Potter was injured.

In 1988, Michael made a late start to the season due to a car accident. He returned to first grade at the end of the season when Steve Mortimer was injured to play half in the Premiership winning team against Balmain.

In 1989, Michael joined Newcastle to play 111 games between 1989 and 1993 and was captain from 1990 to 1993. He played five games for Queensland.

Michael played with Halifax before returning to be coach in the lower grades at Canberra.

In 2001, Michael became coach at Newcastle and won the Premiership in his first season. He is coach of Parramatta in 2007.
