Michael Appleby joined Canterbury in 1988 as a hooker.

After two abbreviated seasons, Michael became a regular member of the Under 21 team as a second row forward.

Michael received the opportunity to play his only first grade game for the club in 1990 against Canberra as a replacement. He played in the reserve grade Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta.

In 1991, Michael continued in the Under 21 team and became a prop. He played in the Premiership winning tem against Parramatta.

In 1992, Michael joined Easts (Roosters) to play on the wing. He played 17 games from 1992 to 1994.

In 1995, Michael joined Parramatta to play two games that season.
