Matthew Ryan joined Canterbury in 1990 as a winger.
The bother of Mark Ryan, Matthew started the season in reserve grade and received the opportunity to play first grade against Canberra as a replacement. He was later relegated to the Under 21 team and played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta as a centre.
In 1991, Matthew started the season late and was promoted to first grade when Glen Nissen was relegated and played in the play-offs.
In 1992, Matthew started the season in first grade but suffered a season ending back injury.
In 1993, Matthew played for Narrabri before returning to Canterbury in 1994 to play centre in first grade. He suffered a broken arm mid-season and returned to play in the Grand Final against Canberra as a replacement.
In 1995, Matthew started the season in first grade but was again injured. He
returned to replace the injured Glen Hughes in the finals and played in the
Premiership winning team against Manly.
In 1996, Matthew suffered a knee injury which ruined his season but returned in
1997 to play for NSW in the Tri-Series. He played three games for NSW that
season.
In 1998, Matthew was a regular member of the first grade team but was relegated
to the bench before the finals for Shane Marteene. He played in the
Preliminary Final against Parramatta but suffered a knee injury to miss the
Grand Final.
In 1999, Matthew joined North Queensland to play nine games that season.
In 2004, Matthew was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
