Mark Sargent joined Canterbury in 1985 as a second row forward.

Mark was a regular member of the Under 23 team but was used often as replacement in reserve grade.

In 1986, Mark was a regular member of the reserve grade team as a prop and received the opportunity to play first grade against North Sydney as a replacement.

Mark's season was interrupted by a knee injury and his 1987 season was also ruined by injury.

In 1988, Mark started the season in first grade but after his season was interrupted by injury, he only played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Canberra as a replacement.

In 1989, Mark joined Newcastle to play 126 games from 1989 to 1995. He played one game for NSW in 1990 and played four Tests for Australia after making the 1990 Kangaroo tour. He played in the 1995 World Cup.

In 1996, Mark returned to Canterbury to play two reserve grade games before retiring.

Mark held a position on the NRL Judiciary before being the Football Manager at Newcastle from 2001 to 2005.
