Mark Hughes joined Canterbury in 1973 as a five eighth.
The brother of Garry and Graeme Hughes, Mark progressed through the grades to play in the reserve grade Semi-Final against Newtown.
In 1974, Mark received the opportunity to play first grade against South Sydney as a replacement.
By mid-season, Mark was a regular member of the first grade team and played in the Grand Final against Easts (Roosters).
In 1975, Mark spent most of the season playing in the centres and played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta. In 1976, Mark played in the Preliminary Final against Manly.
In 1977, Mark did spend most of the season rotating between five eighth and lock. In 1978, Mark returned to play centre all season and play in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta.
In 1979, Mark moved permanently to lock but was injured just before the finals. Mark played in the Grand Final against St George as a replacement.
In 1980, Mark played in all of the matches that season including the Premiership winning team against Easts (Roosters).
In 1981, injuries impacted on the team severely and Mark did play five eight on occasions. Mark captained the team in two matches in 1981. He captained Canterbury on six occasions between 1981 and 1982.
In 1982, Mark continued as lock but in 1983, was injured for a significant period of time and played his last game as a replacement in the Preliminary Final against Parramatta.
In 1996, Mark returned to club in the role of Development Manager.
In 2004 he was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions and is a Life Member of the Football Club.
