Mark Bugden played 32 games for Newtown from 1981 to 1983 as a hooker.

In 1984, Mark joined Canterbury and became a regular member of the reserve grade team. He received his initial opportunity in first grade against St George as a replacement.

Late in the season, Mark was promoted to first grade for Billy Johnstone and played in the Premiership winning team against Parramatta, scoring the winning try.

In 1985, Mark received a lengthy suspension when he broke Steve Rogers jaw in a tackle and after playing in the reserve grade Semi-Final against Canberra, played in the first grade Premiership winning team against St George as a replacement.

Mark became the regular first grade hooker in 1986 and 1987 but in 1988 became a fresh reserve in many games as Joe Thomas became the regular hooker.

Mark played in the Premiership winning team against Balmain as a replacement.

In 1989, Mark joined Parramatta to play 22 games from 1989 to 1990.

In 2004, Bugden was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
