Mark Bird joined Canterbury in 1978 as a hooker.

After starting the season in the Under 23s, Mark spent most of second half of the season playing in reserve grade.

In 1979, Mark became a regular member of the Under 23 team for the next three seasons.

In 1982, Mark became a regular member of the reserve grade team and received the opportunity to play first grade against Balmain when Pat English was injured.
