The brother of Keith McDermott, Les secured a regular position in the third grade team in 1953 before becoming a regular in reserve grade in 1954.
Les missed the 1955 season to return for the 1956 and 1957 seasons as a regular in reserve grade. He commenced the 1956 season in first grade due to Nick Evans being injured.
