Les Hutchings represented Country in 1970 as half back and then was selected to play two games for NSW.

Les joined Canterbury mid-season and received the opportunity to play first grade as five eighth when Dennis Scahill was relegated.

Les was relegated to reserve grade before the finals.

He became the regular first grade half back in 1971 and 1972 and in 1973, Les started the season as captain of reserve grade and played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Easts (Roosters) which was his last game for the club.
