Laurie Neale joined Canterbury in 1961 as a centre.

In 1962, Laurie progressed through the grades to become a winger in reserve grade. He received the opportunity to play first grade against Easts (Roosters) when Graham Tonks was injured.

Laurie became a regular member of the third grade team in 1963, playing in the Grand Final against St George. In 1964, he continued in third grade to close out his career.
