Laurie Campbell joined Canterbury in 1946 as a prop forward.

In 1947, Laurie was a regular in the third grade and played in the Final against Easts (Roosters).

Laurie departed the club for two years before returing in 1950 to become a regular in reserve grade.

He received the opportunity to play first grade when Ron Treuer and Ken Charlton were injured.
