Kevin O'Callaghan joined Canterbury in 1953 as a prop forward.

Kevin progressed through the grades in 1953 and received his opportunity in first grade in the last game of the season when Ken Charlton was injured and Len Holmes was dropped to reserve grade to become captain for the finals.

Kevin became a regular member of the first grade team in 1954. After missing most of the 1955 season, Kevin reclaimed a regular position in first grade in 1956.
