Ken Hemsworth joined Canterbury in 1942 as a fullback.

After an absence of three seasons due to World War II, Ken rejoined the club in 1946.

In 1947, Ken secured a position with the third grade team and played in the 1947 third grade final against Easts (Roosters).

In 1948, Ken started the season in reserve grade and gained the opportunity to play first grade after Bernie Courtney stopped playing after the opening game of the season.
