John Russell joined Canterbury in 1957 as a five eighth.
In 1958, he started the season in reserve grade and quickly secured a centre position in first grade. After starting the 1959 season in first grade, John was relegated to make way for Ken Rowlands.
He returned to first grade in 1960, playing in the Semi Final against Easts (Roosters). In 1961, John started the season in first grade but was relegated to reserve grade for Barry Smith. He was able to regain his first grade position by the end of the season.
After missing most of 1962, John was a regular in the reserve grade team in 1963 playing in the Preliminary Final against South Sydney.
In 1964, he returned to first grade before returning to reserve grade in 1965 for his final season.
In 2004, John was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
