John McDonell played 27 games for Manly from 1965 to 1967 as a centre.
John joined North Sydney to play 100 games from 1968 to 1972, mainly as a lock forward.
John joined Canterbury in 1973 to be a regular second row in first grade, playing in the opening match of the season against his former club, Manly. He also played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Newtown.
In 1974, John became captain in the last half of the season. He captained Canterbury on 15 occasions.
John led the team into the Grand Final against Easts (Roosters) before retiring from the game.
