John Elias played 13 games for South Sydney between 1984 and 1994 as a second row forward in two stints.

In 1986, John joined Canterbury and became a regular first grade replacement. He departed the club mid-season and joined Western Suburbs to play 27 games from 1986 to 1987.

In 1988, John joined Easts (Roosters) to play 16 games from 1988 to 1989. He departed Easts mid-season to join Balmain to play 47 games from 1989 to 1994.

In 1993 John played for Guildford before rejoining Balmain in 1994. John departed Balmain mid-season to rejoin South Sydney.

John travelled to France to play for Avignon and Toulouse and in 2000, John coached Lebanon in the World Cup and was later coach of Pia.
