John Dransfield joined Canterbury in 1974 as a five eighth.

John became a regular member of the Under 23s as a lock and played in the Grand Final against St George.

In 1975, John was a regular member of the Under 23 team in 1975 and played in the Preliminary Final against Balmain.

In 1976, John became a regular member of the reserve grade team and received his opportunity in first grade against Parramatta as a replacement.

John started the 1977 season as captain of the Under 23s but did not complete the season.
