John Delaney joined Canterbury in 1971 as a winger.

After brief appearances in his initial seasons, John became a regular member of the Under 23s team in 1973.

He was promoted to reserve grade in time for the finals and played in the Semi-Final against Newtown.

John was selected in first grade for the start of the 1974 season against South Sydney but was relegated for Don Rogers.

John became a regular member of the Under 23s team and played in the Grand Final against St George.

In 1975, John was a regular member of the reserve grade team and made several first grade appearances when injuries impacted on the first grade team.

He played in the reserve grade Preliminary Semi-Final against Cronulla.

In 1976, John joined South Sydney to play seven first grade games that season.

In 1979, John made brief return to Canterbury to play reserve grade before retiring.
