John Darby joined Canterbury in 1964 as second row forward.
In 1964, John was a regular member of the third grade team. In 1965, he became a regular member of the reserve grade team and got the opportunity to play first grade against Manly as a replacement, he returned to third grade midway through 1966 playing prop.
John missed the 1967 season but returned in 1968 to become a regular member of the third grade team.
In 1969, after starting the season as third grade captain, but was able to maintain a first grade position until he was injured late in the season.
In 1970, John started the season in reserve grade but was relegated mid-season to third grade. He played his last game in the Preliminary Final against South Sydney.
