John Coveney joined Canterbury in 1977 as a prop forward.
Playing in the Country team in 1977, John joined Canterbury late in the season and received the opportunity to play first grade against Penrith when Bill Noonan was injured.
In 1978, John became a regular member of the reserve grade team but was promoted to first grade for Phil Charlton to play in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta.
In 1979, John started the season in first grade but after playing for NSW, his season ended with a knee injury and he missed the finals.
After a late start to the 1980 season, John retained his first grade position and played in the Premiership winning team against Easts (Roosters).
After a consistent season in 1981, John was selected to play for NSW in 1982. He played four games for NSW from 1979 to 1982.
In 1983, John played in the Preliminary Final against Parramatta.
In 1984, John joined Western Suburbs to play 12 games that season before retiring.
In 2004, John was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
