John Burns played one first grade game for South Sydney in 1962.

He joined Canterbury in 1963 as a centre and was selected in first grade for the opening match of the season against his former club South Sydney.

After being relegated mid-season for Clive Gartner, John returned to first grade when winger Bill Petley was injured.

After starting the 1964 season in first grade, he was relegated to reserve grade when Barry Smith returned from injury.
