John Armstrong played 80 games for Western Suburbs between 1964 and 1970 starting as a centre but by 1970 was playing prop.

In 1971, John joined Canterbury and became a regular prop in first grade, playing the opening match of the season against his former club, scoring in his debut.

In 1972, John joined Easts (Roosters) to play 35 first grade games between 1972 and 1973. He played in the Grand Final against Manly.

John passed away in January 1998 aged 53.
