Joe Palmer joined Canterbury in 1955 as a prop forward.

Progressing through the grades quickly, Joe finished his initial season in first grade, when second rower Malcolm Jones was injured.

Joe secured a regular position in the reserve grade team over the next three seasons.

In 1962, he was appointed the third grade coach and held this position until 1965. He coached the 1963 third grade team to the Grand Final against St George.

In 1966, Joe coached the reserve grade team.
