Joe played 31 games for Newtown from 1931 to 1935 which included playing in the 1933 Premiership winning final.

Joining Canterbury in 1936, Joe played mainly on the wing but was just at home playing centre.

Joe played in the inaugural semi-final against Easts (Roosters) in 1936 and was a member of the 1938 Premiership winning team scoring two tries near full-time of the final to seal the win for Canterbury.

Joe also played in the winning City Cup team of 1939 but missed the finals in 1940.

Joe Gartner passed away in 1999.
