Jim Tutill joined Canterbury in 1948 as a centre.

After drifting between the lower grades for his initial season, Jim received his first grade opportunity when Eddie Tracey was injured.

In 1949, Jim drifted between first grade and reserve grade as the club trialled many combinations. He continued his sterling service for the club for a further six seasons.
