Jim Matthews joined Canterbury in 1962 as a half back after playing in Leeton.

He was a regular member of the reserve grade team and received an opportunity to play first grade against Parramatta when Ray Beavan was injured.

In 1963, Jim became a regular member of the first grade team playing five eighth.

He joined Easts in 1964 to play 70 games from 1964 to 1968, captaining the team to the Semi-Final against Canterbury in 1967 and the Semi-Final against St George in 1968.

Jim completed his playing career in the Illawarra competition in 1969.
