Jim Gartner joined Canterbury in 1946 as a centre.

Jim is the nephew of Joe Gartner, brother of Clive and Keith Gartner and the cousin of Ray Gartner. Jim is also the father of Australian representative, Russell Gartner.

Jim Gartner was a regular in the 1947 third grade team and played in the final against Easts (Roosters). After only playing a few games in 1948, Jim became a regular in the reserve grade team in 1949, playing fullback and centre.

In 1950, Jim returned to third grade as captain and mainly playing five eighth.

After playing two games in two years, which includes the third grade semi-final against South Sydney in 1951, Jim became a regular member of the reserve grade team as a centre and playing in the reserve grade semi-final against Manly.

Jim received his first grade opportunity when Billy Miller was injured. After missing the 1954 and 1955 seasons, Jim returned to become a regular first grade player in 1956 and 1957.

After starting 1958 in first grade, Jim was relegated to reserve grade for Reg Cooper.
