Jason Smith joined Canterbury in 1990 as a second row forward.

After starting the season late, Jason started in reserve grade and received the opportunity to play first grade against Cronulla as a replacement.

In 1991, Jason became a regular member of the Under 21s and was made captain mid-season. He played in the Premiership winning team against Parramatta.

In 1992, Jason became a regular member of the reserve grade team and in 1993 became a regular member of the first grade team. He played in the Preliminary Final against Brisbane as a replacement.

In 1994, Jason played for Queensland before playing in the Grand Final against Canberra.

Jason played 16 games for Queensland from 1994 to 2000. He played 16 Tests for Australia from 1994 to 2000. Jason was a member of the 1994 Kangaroos and was a member of the 1995 World Cup team.

In 1995, Jason played in the Premiership winning team against Manly as a replacement and in 1996 joined Parramatta to play 89 games from 1996 to 2000.

In 2001, Jason joined Hull and in 2005 returned to Australia to play for Canberra where he played 38 games from 2005 to 2006.

Jason joined North Queensland for 2007.
