Jack O'Brien joined Canterbury for the last round of the 1944 season as a winger in third grade.

In 1945, Jack secured the five eighth position in the reserve grade team and played in the reserve grade Grand Final against South Sydney.

He received the opportunity to play first grade when Roy Hasson was injured.
