Jack Hartwell Snr is the father of Jack Hartwell Jnr who played first grade from 1948-1951.

Hartwell Snr joined Canterbury in the inaugural year after playing for Western Suburbs in 1934 where he played two first grade games.

Jack was a prop or second rower and played in the opening first grade game where he scored the first ever try in first grade.

Jack maintained a first grade spot for most of 1936 and played in the inaugural semi-final against Easts (Roosters).
