After playing three games, he was promoted directly to first grade to replace the injured Bob Lindfield for two matches. The reserve grade hooker Bill Porter was also injured at the time.
In 1937, after commencing the season as third grade hooker, Jack was promoted to first grade for the City Cup matches after Bill Porter was injured.
