Jack Colgan joined Canterbury in 1946 as a prop forward.

He was a regular member of the third grade team in 1947 and 1948 playing in the Final against Easts (Roosters) in 1947 and the semi-final against Western Suburbs in 1948.

In 1949, Jack became a regular member of the reserve grade team. After a late start to the season in 1950, Jack received his first grade opportunity when Len Holmes was injured.
