Greg Whitbread joined Canterbury in 1985 as a lock forward.

Greg was a regular member of the Under 23 team but was used as a replacement in the reserve grade Semi-Final against Canberra.

In 1986, Greg became a regular member of the reserve grade team and received the opportunity to play first grade against Penrith as a replacement.

In 1987, Greg continued in reserve grade but played first grade when Steve Folkes was injured. He played in the reserve grade Preliminary Semi-Final against Easts (Roosters).

In 1988, Greg joined Gold Coast to play 52 games from 1988 to 1991.
