Greg Purcell joined Canterbury in 1970 as a goal kicking hooker.
Greg was a regular member of the third grade team and played in the Preliminary Final against South Sydney.
In 1971 he received the opportunity to play first grade against Manly when Marty Driscoll was injured and became a regular member of the first grade team.
In 1972, Greg started the season in first grade but was relegated for Neville Hornery and returned to third grade to captain the team to the Grand Final against St George.
After starting the 1973 season in the Under 23s, Greg returned to first grade when Dennis Manteit was injured, allowing Bill Noonan to move from hooker to prop.
In 1974, Greg joined Cronulla to play 18 first grade games between 1974 and 1975.
