Gavin Hill joined Canterbury in 1992 as a goal kicking second row forward.

After starting in reserve grade, Gavin received the opportunity to play first grade against Balmain when Scott Tronc was relegated. He became a regular prop in the first grade team.

Gavin represented New Zealand in five Tests from 1992 to 1993.

In 1993, Gavin was injured mid-season but returned to play in the Preliminary Final against Brisbane as a replacement.

In 1994, Gavin played in England before joining Auckland in 1995 to play 14 games from 1995 to 1996.
