Gary Stewart joined Canterbury in 1969 as a hooker.

He was a regular member of the third grade team and received the opportunity to play first grade against South Sydney when Marty Driscoll was relegated.

Gary returned to third grade and played in the Grand Final against South Sydney, playing in the second row.

Gary joined Cronulla in 1970 to play 27 first grade games from 1971 to 1974. In 1972, Gary became a regular prop for the rest of his career.

In 1975, Gary rejoined Canterbury to be a regular member of the reserve grade team as prop. He played in the Preliminary-Final against Cronulla.
