Gary Stevens played 163 games for South Sydney between 1965 and 1976 as a second row forward. He was a member of the Premiership winning teams in 1970 and 1971.

Gary played five games for NSW between 1972 and 1975. He played five Tests for Australia from 1972 to 1975 and was a member of the 1973 Kangaroos. Gary played in the World Cup teams of 1972 and 1975.

Gary joined Canterbury in 1977 and started the season in first grade against Cronulla.

His season was cut short by illness but returned in 1978 to be a regular member of the first grade team and played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta before retiring.
