Garry Hughes joined Canterbury in 1971 as a five eighth.
Garry is the brother of Mark and Graeme Hughes and the father of Glen, Steven and Corey Hughes.
After only limited appearances in 1972, Garry became a regular member and captain of the Under 23 team in 1973 and played in the Preliminary Final against Balmain.
In 1974, Garry started the season in the Under 23s but received an opportunity to play first grade against St George as a replacement.
Garry replaced Peter Winchester for a number of weeks as the first grade five eighth.
Garry became a regular member of the reserve grade team and played in the preliminary final against Easts (Roosters).
Garry was also used as a replacement for first grade in the finals and was a second half replacement in the major semi final against Easts (Roosters).
In 1975, Garry started the season in reserve grade but after Don Moseley was injured he returned to first grade for the rest of the season and played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta.
In 1976, Garry started the season in first grade and was in constant competition with his brother Mark for the five eighth position.
Garry was selected in first grade for the finals and played in the Preliminary Final against Manly.
After a late start to the 1977 season, Garry was a regular member of the reserve grade team and was promoted late in the season when brother Mark Hughes was injured and captained the team at the end of the season. Garry was to captain Canterbury on 42 occasions between 1977 and 1983.
In 1978, Garry was a regular member of the reserve grade team and captained the team.
In 1979, Garry was able to secure a first grade position when Mark Hughes shifted to lock. He was to be the regular five eighth for the next five seasons.
Garry played in the Grand Final against St George
In 1980, Garry played in the Premiership winning team against Easts (Roosters).
In 1981, Garry missed the start of the season due to illness and missed a significant amount of games but returned in 1982 to play most of the season.
In 1983, Garry played in the final series with a broken cheekbone and played in the Preliminary Final against Parramatta.
Garry played his last season in 1984, as a regular member of the reserve grade team.
After retirement Garry was employed initially in Junior Development and became the Football Manager until 2004.
Garry was a nominee for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions in 2004 and is a Life Member of the Football Club.
Garry is currently on the Bulldogs Ambassadors Club Committee.
