Garry Dowling joined Canterbury in 1971 as a fullback.
Garry represented Country II in 1971 playing with Oakdale and was recruited mid-season.
After only a short spell in reserve grade, Garry received the opportunity to play first grade against Penrith when Les Johns was injured.
In 1972, Garry started the season in first grade but was relegated to reserve grade for Chris Anderson. He then played in the Premiership winning team against St George.
In 1973, Garry returned to first grade and played in the City II team before playing in the 1974 Grand Final against Easts (Roosters).
In 1975, Garry was selected to play two games for NSW and played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta.
In 1976, Garry received a broken jaw in the first game of the season to return to play in the Preliminary Final against Manly.
After being the regular fullback in 1977, Garry was relegated in 1978 for Greg Brentnall.
He joined Parramatta in 1979 to play 37 games between 1979 and 1980 and toured New Zealand with the Australia team.
Garry played four games for NSW between 1975 and 1981 and played two Tests for Australia in 1980.
Garry joined Western Suburbs in 1981 to play 19 games before moving to the Gold Coast in 1982.
Garry passed away in March 1983 in a car accident.
In 2004, Garry was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
