Fred Chaplin joined the club for the inaugural season as a prop that had played ten first grade games with South Sydney between 1930 and 1932.

Fred played in the initial first grade game against North Sydney and maintained his spot for most of the season.

The recruitment of Henry Porter in 1936 forced Fred into the reserve grade team where he was a regular member.
