Fred Anderson joined Canterbury in 1951 as a hooker.
He played in the third grade semi-final against South Sydney in 1951. Progressing through the grades quickly, Fred became a regular in first grade for 12 consecutive seasons.
He built a reputation as a fast striker of the ball and was not far away from representative selection for most of his career. Fred played for NSW in 1958 and 1961.
The club only made the semi finals once in his 12 seasons in first grade. Fred captained first grade in two games in 1963.
In 1963, Fred was called into the touring South Africa squad to assist the lack of depth in the forwards. He played one test for South Africa against New Zealand. Technically, Fred became the first local junior to play in a test match.
Fred became a Life Member of the Football Club. In 1964, Fred joined South Sydney for four seasons playing 57 first grade games including the 1965 Grand Final against St George.
Fred retired after 1967 with Elwyn Walters and George Piggins emerging through the South Sydney ranks.
In 2004, Fred was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
Fred passed away in February 2012.
