Ern McLean joined Canterbury in 1961 as a fullback.
He received his opportunity to play first grade against Newtown in 1961.
He was a regular member of the reserve grade team in his initial season and after missing 1962, Ern returned to be a regular member of the third grade team in 1963 as a centre.
Ern was a regular member of the reserve grade team in 1964 after starting the season in third grade.
After missing the 1965 season, Ern made a return to start the 1966 season in third grade but he retired mid-season.
