Doug McManus joined Canterbury in 1963 as a five eighth.
He was a regular member of the reserve grade team in his opening season before making his initial appearance in first grade against Parramatta as a replacement for the injured Jim Matthews. He then went on and played in the reserve grade Preliminary Final against South Sydney.
In 1964, Doug started the season in reserve grade but secured the five eighth position in first grade when Leo Toohey was injured.
He was a regular member of the reserve grade team for 1965 and 1966 before becoming captain-coach of the reserve grade team midway through 1966 when Jim Palmer departed the club.
