Doug Kelly joined Canterbury in 1969 as a winger.
Doug started his initial season in the opening match of the season against Newtown but midway through the season was relegated for the return of Ray Strudwick.
In 1970, Doug started the season in reserve grade but was relegated to third grade mid season.
In 1971, he was a regular member of the third grade side, scoring a record 15 tries for the season, beating Jim Wilson's 1947 record of 12 tries.
Doug played his last game in the Premiership winning team against St George.
