Dick Wells joined Canterbury in 1962 as a winger.

In 1963, Dick became a regular member of the third grade team and played in the Grand Final against South Sydney, playing fullback.

In 1964, he became a regular member of the reserve grade team as fullback before receiving the opportunity to play first grade against St George when Les Johns was unavailable.
