Dick McDermott joined Canterbury in 1958 as a fullback.

In 1959, he became a regular member of the reserve grade team and received his opportunity to play first grade when Bill Petley was injured. Dick played in the reserve grade Preliminary Final against North Sydney.

In 1960, he maintained his position in reserve grade but in 1961, spent much of the season in third grade.

In 1962, Dick commenced the season in reserve grade and was promoted to first grade when Ray Beavan was unavailable late in the season, playing centre.

He was to stay in first grade for two seasons playing centre before being relegated to reserve grade near the end of the 1964 season.

In 1965, Dick captained the reserve grade team and played three mid-season games in 1966 to close out his career.
