Dennis Ward joined Canterbury in 1962 as a half back.
In 1963, he became a regular member of the reserve grade team and played in the Preliminary Final against South Sydney.
In 1964, Dennis continued in reserve grade and received the opportunity to play first grade against Easts (Roosters) when Leo Toohey was injured.
In 1965, Dennis became a regular member of the first grade team and played for Widnes in the 1965-66 off-season. He returned to Canterbury in May 1966 and was unable to regain a first grade berth due to the form of Ross Kidd.
In 1967, Dennis spent another season in reserve grade before leaving the club late in the season to play in Wollongong.
In 1968, he joined Manly to play 79 games from 1968 to 1972, playing in the 1968 Grand Final against South Sydney.
Dennis played for NSW in 1969, toured New Zealand and played two tests for Australia to be the first local junior to play a test for Australia. He was also a member of the 1972 World Cup squad.
In 1973, he moved to Wests in Newcastle as captain-coach, played for NSW and was selected in the 1973 Kangaroo tour.
He then moved to Brisbane to coach Wynum-Manly and has held a key role in the QRL in development.
