David Boyd joined Canterbury in 1985 as a lock forward.

David was a regular member of the Under 23 team and in 1986, became a regular member of the reserve grade team. He received the opportunity to play first grade against St George as a replacement for Geoff Robinson. David became the 500th first grade player to play for the club.

David was used as a first grade replacement in the finals and played in the Grand Final against Parramatta as a replacement.

In 1987, David started the season in reserve grade but was injured mid-season.

In 1988, David joined Newcastle to play 113 games between 1988 and 1993.

David joined Halifax before returning to play for Western Reds from 1995 to 1996 where he played a further 35 first grade games.
