Darren McCarthy played 68 games for South Sydney from 1983 to 1991 as a centre in two stints.
The son of Bob McCarthy, Darren joined Canterbury in 1987 and became a regular member of the reserve grade team. He received the opportunity to play first grade against Illawarra as a replacement.
Darren played in the 1987 reserve grade Preliminary Semi-Final against Easts (Roosters).
In 1988, Darren continued in reserve grade but played in the Premiership winning team against Balmain as a replacement.
In 1989 he started the season in first grade but was relegated for Jamie Corcoran.
Darren was able to return to first grade mid-season when Jamie Corcoran was relegated.
Darren returned to South Sydney in 1990 to complete his career.
