Col Oates joined Canterbury in 1959 as a prop forward. Col is the brother of Brian Oates.

Col became a regular member of the third grade team in his initial season and played in the Semi-Final against Newtown.

He continued in third grade in 1960 but was promoted to first grade at the start of the 1961 season in the second row.

Col could not secure a regular position which was given to Ken Dawson, but he did complete the season in first grade when Mick Vaughan was injured.
